CHAPTER 20

Feather

"Patience, I’m so sorry." Alma grabbed the doorway and steadied herself before falling to the floor.

Patience dropped the bag of potatoes she was carrying and pushed her way past Tug and Feather to her friend’s side.

She knelt down and touched Alma’s face. "Are you alright? Should we call an ambulance?"

When Alma didn’t respond, she looked up at Tug and Feather with disgust. "What did you kids say to her? You know she’s ill. Why would you push her to the point of exhaustion?"

"She was unlocking the door when we walked up, Patience," Feather replied. "All we said was hello."

"We wanted to finish our conversation from the other day. Feather had a weird connection with a spirit yesterday and we had some questions for Alma," Tug added.

"Olive called this morning and told me all about your breakdown." Patience patted Alma's hand. "Dear woman, I'm right here beside you."

"We know it was Alma who called us yesterday, directing Feather and me to the home on Hazelwood Drive. An otherworldly force was waiting and caused such a ruckus the police were called. We came here to ask her about it, and that's when she conveniently fell to the ground."

Alma groaned and opened her eyes. "Patience? What happened?"

"You’re going to be just fine, dear. Let’s try sitting you up and see if you experience dizziness."

Alma’s eyelids fluttered as she sat while Patience watched her with concern. After an appropriate length of time, she glanced around. "I was queasy this morning and didn’t eat. I need to be more diligent in my food intake."

"And your baloney outtake," Tug quipped.

"Can you stand, hon?" Patience held her underneath one arm. "Feather, will you help me?"

"Alma’s playing you like a fiddle, Patience," Tug grumbled.

"Tug’s being a little dramatic." Feather frowned at Tug and took Alma’s other arm, guiding her up and inside to her antique chair. "He’s had emergency training, so he can sit with her until she’s steady. Patience, I can help you in the kitchen."

"Just a bowl of leftover potato cheese soup and a few crackers, Patience," Alma called weakly. "And some green tea, if you don’t mind."

When they were in the kitchen, Feather tapped Patience on the shoulder. "I want you to know, we discovered the name of the spirit who has been bothering your guests. That’s what we were speaking with Alma about."

Patience displayed a strange mixture of relief and fear on her face. "You’re sure? Who was it? Someone other than Rebecca Ruvey?"

"No, there was a more recent violent act in this house. It happened in the seventies."

"That’s odd. I don't recall anything from the time my father lived here. It must've been vagrants before he took ownership."

Feather noted Patience biting her lip. She’d learned not only how to read the signs of the dead but also the signals the living gave of their deceit. "I’d like to speak with Gemini first, before I tell you the entire story. But we believe you could be in danger, Patience. Alma isn’t the person she seems.
